Amsterdam, Volkshotel has a rich past that deserves to be recognised. For 42 years it belonged to De Volkskrant – one of the biggest, most progressive Dutch newspapers. After the newspaper moved out, the empty building transformed. Thanks to the Urban Resort Foundation it became one of the largest ‘Broedplaatsen’ (creative workspaces) in Holland. Volkshotel is housed in the former Volkskrant building, a 1960’s concrete structure that is open, optimistic and functional. When it opened in 1965, it was the most modern newspaper building in Holland.
An interior full of magnified newspaper cut outs and original elements of steel, wood, concrete and glass. The design is inspired by the physicality of newspaper production and the vanishing world of paper, ink and photographs.
Simplicity enhances the materials and detailing. Silk screens printed by hand silk-screened directly onto the bedroom walls are a final reminder of the tradition of newspaper making that this building symbolizes.
In the Volkshotel there are nine special and unique rooms with differents concept and styles. Whether it’s sleeping in a larger than life jukebox or dozing away in a tree house amongst nature, anything is possible in Volkshotel’s special rooms. The themes of Volkshotel’s special rooms not only focus on styling, but also involve design and interior architecture as well. From layout to floor and from bathroom to window, every room is unique.
Also on the rooftop of the building you can relax between Sauna and massages.
